Wenatchee Valley Medical Center / Confluence Health's Policies on Death with Dignity

1. Allows doctors and other health care providers to talk with patients about treatment options under the Washington Death with Dignity Act. Yes

Confluence will respect patient choices and provider choices. It is up to each physician to decide whether to and to what degree they will participate in the provision of services permitted under the Death with Dignity Act.

2. Ensures that patients who request assistance with Washington's Death with Dignity Act are referred to a supportive organization or provider. Unclear

The policy does not address referrals to outside resources.

3. Allows doctors to participate in Death with Dignity in its hospital. Yes, with restrictions

Confluence Health does not encourage or discourage the provision of any medical service by a physician on staff as long as the service is legal and within the scope of practice of the physician. However, Death with Dignity medications may not be administered or ingested at the hospital campus.

4. Allows doctors to participate in Death with Dignity in clinics and other facilities it owns or operates. Yes, with restrictions

Same restriction as above.

5. Allows its pharmacy to fill prescriptions for Death with Dignity medication. Yes

It is up to each pharmacist to decide whether they will fill a prescription for patients participating in the Act. If the pharmacist does not wish to participate, then they may facilitate a referral to a willing pharmacist if known or shall notify the prescribing physician.

6. Allows patients to ingest Death with Dignity medication during their hospital stay. No
