Lourdes Medical Center's Policies on Death with Dignity

1. Allows doctors and other health care providers to talk with patients about treatment options under the Washington Death with Dignity Act. No

Lourdes Medical Center enforces the Catholic Ethical Religious Directives (ERDS), which restrict patient choice at the end of life. (1) "Patients in danger of death are provided with whatever information is necessary to help them understand their condition and . . . are offered the appropriate medical information that would make it possible to address the morally legitimate choices available to them at Lourdes."

2. Ensures that patients who request assistance with Washington's Death with Dignity Act are referred to a supportive organization or provider. No

"Consistent with Lourdes corporate obligations, policies, and its moral and religious beliefs, and in keeping with the values and principles inherent in the medical-moral teaching of the Catholic Church as promulgated by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and the local Ordinary under which this institution operates, care, treatment and services for persons facing the reality of death are provided."

3. Allows doctors to participate in Death with Dignity in its hospital. No

Lourdes Health Network does not participate nor in any way assist with Death with Dignity on any Lourdes Health Network campus. "End of life wishes, including no resuscitation or life-sustaining treatments, will be honored and implemented to the extent permitted by law and within the guidelines of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services."

4. Allows doctors to participate in Death with Dignity in clinics and other facilities it owns or operates. No
5. Allows its pharmacy to fill prescriptions for Death with Dignity medication. No
6. Allows patients to ingest Death with Dignity medication during their hospital stay. No
